March 1 deadline for DMAP enrollment

March 1 deadline for DMAP enrollment

By Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources

Landowners can become land stewards and leave a lasting legacy for wildlife on property they own or hunt by enrolling in the Deer Management Assistance Program.

The 2017 application deadline is March 1 for DMAP Levels 2 and 3, and public lands. All applications received following this day will be automatically enrolled at Level 1 until the application can be reviewed for consideration at another level.

With three levels of enrollment, DMAP is suitable for properties of any size.  Landowners can learn how to best create the habitat wildlife needs through educational resources, hands-on workshops, consultation with local wildlife professionals and property-specific site visits and management plans.

The Department of Natural Resources will assist landowners with implementing forest regeneration and deer hunting practices that emphasize property goals while considering the ecological and social impacts of white-tailed deer.

Participants in Wisconsin’s DMAP can benefit from personal interaction with DNR staff and communication on land and herd management; networking with other landowners with common goals; written management plans; and the potential for reduced price antlerless tags.

Level 1 has no acreage requirement, no annual fee. Level 2 requires 160 to 640 acres (option of cooperatives) and a $75/3 year commitment. Level 3 requires 640+ acres (option of cooperatives) and a $150/3 year commitment.

Like-minded neighbors can join a group cooperative to share resources and improve habitat over a larger area.

Applications are accepted at any time, but landowners with properties larger than 160 acres are encouraged to apply before March 1 to be eligible for a site visit and management plan in 2017.
