My heart has been heavy since April 15, 2013, when the best and worst of humankind converged at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

I've prayed a lot, specifically for the healing of the injured, and for the grieving to receive peace and comfort which surpasses all understanding.

Being a long distance runner myself, I can't help but feel for the poor runners who were turned away before they were able to cross the finish line.

Since hunting season is long gone and the 2013 season is depressingly far away, let's reflect on our favorite hunting moments of 2012.

Mine came on the day my 12-year-old son, Graham, got his first buck.

After three seasons, countless cold hours and 26 fruitless trips to the deer stand without a presentable shot, I can honestly say Graham paid his dues for that little 3-pointer. My first buck didn't come easy either, so I wouldn't have it any other way.

Until I became Buckmasters Online Editor, I was Rack Magazine's Art Director for 14 years. It never ceased to amaze me how few hunters took the time to photograph their bucks, even the GIANT ones.

I had to pass on countless 200-plus-inchers for magazine covers simply because the hunter had either taken one or two gosh awful photos with a cell phone, usually in the back of a pickup truck littered with trash or, worse, hanging at the processor.
