2010 Grizzly 550 FI with EPS

From Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A.

2010 Grizzly 550 FI with EPSYamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., introduced the Grizzly 550 FI with Electric Power Steering (EPS) in 2008, completing the Grizzly line and offering top-of-the-line features on a mid-sized ATV.  The Grizzly 550 FI with EPS quickly became a favorite of ATV enthusiasts and outdoorsmen and making it the best-selling 550-class utility ATV.

This mid-sized utility ATV takes all of the consumer-favorite features — the groundbreaking technology of EPS, the comfort, terrainability and toughness — found in the company’s flagship Grizzly 700 FI and incorporates them into a machine with a slightly smaller engine. The 550 not only meets customer requests for a 500- to 600-sized model, it exceeds expectations by featuring all the bells and whistles that adorn the Grizzly 700 FI.

The Grizzly 550 FI is jam-packed with the features and benefits customers have come to expect from Yamaha, starting with reliable power from the 558cc liquid-cooled, four-valve SOHC engine. As on the Grizzly 700 FI, the 550 features a forged piston for reduced weight and added durability, while an aluminum cylinder body with composite coating maximizes the weight reduction and wear resistance while increasing the cooling ability. The roller rocker arms lessen friction in the valve train, which allows the engine to rev more freely leading to better overall performance and improved throttle response.

View More New ProductsThe Yamaha EPS system is unparalleled in the industry and has received numerous awards and praise from customers. As the rider turns the handlebars and the torque- and speed-sensing EPS system senses the twisting force put on the handlebars and wheels, the electric motor kicks in and assists in the turn.  The harder the rider turns, the more the EPS assists allowing the rider to tackle the toughest terrain with the least amount of effort.

Although the EPS system is definitely a favorite feature, the Grizzly 550 FI is also offered without power steering and comes with a smaller price tag.

The Yamaha Fuel Injection (YFI) system improves throttle response throughout the powerband, helping the rider take advantage of the low- to mid-range power.  YFI offers unmatched performance at high elevation as the system is able to detect and compensate for changes in altitude. The more precise fuel delivery offered by the YFI makes for consistent power, better throttle response and improved fuel economy under a multitude of riding situations. In addition, YFI means no choke and easier cold weather starting.

Also gracing the Grizzly 550 FI is Yamaha’s industry-exclusive Ultramatic automatic transmission system. The transmission’s gearing makes full use of the powerband under a variety of riding situations, and the automatic centrifugal clutch maintains constant belt tension for reduced belt wear and industry-exclusive all-wheel downhill engine braking. The shift lever is conveniently located on the left side, and gear options include high, low, park, neutral and reverse.

An open gate shifter allows the rider to easily see what gear he or she has selected. This is also easy to see on the LCD display, which offers dual trip meter, speedometer and odometer, fuel level indicator, On-Command indicator, and EPS and fuel injection indicator lights. The EPS and fuel injection indicator lights let the rider know when the systems need to be serviced according to the self diagnostic system.

The three-way On-Command system, featuring push-button 2WD, 4WD and 4WD with differential lock, compliments the Grizzly’s powerhouse. Located on the right handlebar, the push-button is at the rider’s fingertips to command all four wheels as the terrain dictates.

The Grizzly 550 FI offers other “extras” that go a long way in making this machine durable and provide added convenience to the rider. The air intake is located on top of the engine allowing for easier access and service as well as helping to keep water and other debris from entering the air box. The CVT air intake and exhaust ducts are also centrally located and mounted to help reduce the possibility of debris and water entering the transmission system. New A-arm guards cover more surface area, which increases protection of vital components while a new, improved CV boot material gives better resistance to tearing.

The fuel tank is placed under the seat for maximum centralization of mass. The front and rear shocks are mounted lower on the A-arm compared to competitive models, which improves the low center of mass feeling as well.

Fully independent and adjustable front and rear suspension ensures optimal traction and terrainability with 7.1 inches of travel up front and a class-leading 9.5 inches in the rear. The Yamaha-exclusive WideArc front suspension provides five inches of more useable ground clearance within the Grizzly’s overall 11.8 inches of clearance.

Another popular feature found on both the 700 and now the 550 is the class leading four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes.  The Grizzly 550 FI also features ground-grabbing tires mounted to aluminum wheels to get you moving. The Dunlop tires feature a Yamaha-exclusive tread pattern for excellent traction and rider comfort.

On the side of comfort and convenience, the Grizzly 550 FI boasts a thick, plush seat and full floorboards for protection from the elements along with a new throttle lever shape. Two storage boxes — one under the seat and another found in the right front fender — offer plenty of storage in a sealed, water-resistant space. This is of course in addition to the 99 pounds and 187 pounds of carry capacity on the front and rear racks, respectively, and the 1,322 pounds of towing capacity. The SecureMount rack system offers superior fit and finish with Genuine Yamaha Accessories, which were designed in tandem with the ATV.

Both 2010 Grizzly 550 FI models (with and without EPS) are available in Hunter Green, Steel Blue and Realtree AP HD Camouflage.

ATVs with engines greater than 90cc are recommended for use only by riders age 16 years and older.
